'Homage to the Square'

My 2016 collection of Irish Linen contemporary patchwork home accessories is inspired by Modernism. The simplified geometric shapes and harmony have a hint of Dutch De Stijl, Russian Suprematism, the works and theories of Mark Rothko, Josef Albers, and my all time favourite, Irish artist and architect Eileen Gray. I inherited and Eileen Gray rug many years ago and it sparked my interest in her work and life, two years ago I finally managed visit her unique Villa on the South of France. In my early twenties I picked up a set of Wendingen magazines at a flea market and framed them as their covers were so exquisite and works of art in themselves, I never tire gazing at their genius compositions and I wanted to create accessories for my sofa that reflected these elements in a non complicated way. By eliminating strong colour by using just the subtle natural colour of the flax plant itself and plain neutral white in my cushions, it allows one to appreciate the clean shapes. I think the essence of modernism translates really well into the texture of Irish Linen and the results are very fresh.
