Rose Cushions in Vintage Pink Irish Linens, Summer 2023

Rose Cushions in Vintage Irish Linen, Summer 2023

Handcrafted sculptural cushion taking the form of a flower created from vintage Irish Linen. Katie is known for her original use of recycled and deadstock materials transforming them into beautiful artisanal pieces. First designed in 2015 in an undyed natural cloth, each rose created since then is one-of-a-kind. The way the delicate petals fall, the shapes, its shadows, curves and folds are unique. The generous layers voluptuously spill out from a scrunched and textured centre in a dramatic show with movement and silent poetry. The frayed raw edges add an extra organic softness as well as allowing the viewer to see the individual threads on close inspection, appreciating the qualities of the cloth. The fabric has been cleverly manipulated and sculpted overall in a manner reminiscent of couture fashion. This exquisite pink bloom had been inspired by Katie’s love of gardening, with a particular debt to an old rose garden which she has carefully nurtured and brought back to life after a period of neglect. Linen, being made entirely from a plant, has a particular synergy with the natural world of flower forms and blooms.
