Vintage Liberty of London

Vintage Liberty of London Blue Silk Scarf and Irish Linen Cushion Pillow

Custom made one-of-kind cushion (pillow) created from an exquisite vintage circa 1950s silk Liberty of London fashion scarf in a striking navy blue and white modern design. The bold central square disperses at it edge and wisps out into delicate lines. This sumptuously soft to the touch silk has a fine twill texture with visible diagonal grain and a subtle sheen. Note the old style of Liberty logo at the bottom right and corner and where the dye beautifully shows characteristics of age and history. Backed in new 100% pure Irish linen, the aristocrat of textiles, lined in a layer of natural bamboo wadding, filled with new plush duck feather insert and a concealed zip.

Founded by Arthur Liberty, the world famous British department store Liberty of London began trading in 1875 in a small shop called East India House, by the 1920s it was a leading establishment. Liberty was not a designer himself but a businessman who had a gift for recognising talent and new trends, hiring the top designers of the time. By the 50s the store had a seasonal brochure dedicated solely to it’s scarves and still today a third of the ground floor of it’s magnificent mock-Tudor London flagship store is devoted to scarves. Throughout the 20s and 30s Liberty produced scarves in designs heavily influenced by Egypt and the Orient, appealing to the continuing fashion for the exotic. This flamboyant pattern, evocative of ostrich feathers alludes to such luxury.

A contemporary cushion (pillow) constructed with antique elements by using fragments of precious fabric.
