Large Gongman Film Green Silk Scarf with Irish Linen Cushion Pillow

Custom made one-of-a-kind luxury cushion (pillow) created from an exquisite vintage silk fashion scarf in a beautiful vibrant apple green. It was a promotional scarf designed by the British film company ‘Rank’, an entertainment conglomerate founded by industrialist J. Arthur Rank in April 1937 at one time the largest film company in Briain and recognisable by it’s iconic logo. The company is long gone but it’s emblem and trademark, the Gongman, first used in 1935 by the group's distribution company General Film Distributors is seen in the opening titles of their films. The sequence depicts a man striking a huge gong with a deep resonant sound. Different athletes such as boxers and wrestlers were cast to pay the gongman over the years and a Chinese tam tam was struck separately for the actual recorded sound. This is a beautiful heavyweight silk twill, screen printed and hand rolled, an archival piece and collectors item from British designer Richard Allan, known for his high quality innovative 60s and 70s bold, psychedelic designs. His company was established in 1962, he collaborated with Schiaparelli and Yves St Laurent and his scarves were used in many film and television productions, an example being Diana Rigg who wore them in the popular 1960's television series The Avengers. It was produced in two different colour-ways, the other with navy and green and in a red, dated 1979. It features in Thames & hudson’s ‘Scarves’ by Nicky Albrechtsen and Fola Solanke.

Backed in new 100% pure Irish linen, the aristocrat of textiles and certified by the Irish Linen Guild, lined in a layer of natural bamboo wadding, filled with new plush duck feather insert and a concealed zip.The traditional oatmeal color is a combination of the unbleached raw colour of the natural flax plant on the weft intertwined with pristine white on the warp, resulting in a beautiful dabbled effect.

A contemporary cushion (pillow) constructed with antique elements by using fragments of precious fabric.

Would go well paired with our 1920s Art Pottery Ruskin grasshopper green vase, also available on 1stdibs. A very stylish piece, perfect for a movie buff or cinematic collect to have as an unusual specimen of a special era. With it’s striking line and colour it is extraordinarily aesthetically pleasing

and would look great matched with Mid-Century Modern furniture.
