Antique Liberty of London
Rare Vintage Liberty of London Silk Scarf with Irish Linen Cushion Pillow
Custom made one-of-a-kind luxury cushion (pillow) created from an extremely rare vintage silk Liberty of London fashion scarf in a soft blue with an exquisite design illustrating birds. Sitting on branches in amongst wild shrubbery with delicate flowers and daintily stylised leaves it is one of the most precious and beautiful pieces of fabric we have in our collection.
This glorious pillow is such a unique accessory to an interior and would be stunning matched with oriental antiques. It captures the essence of the Liberty store that originally sold exotic decorative arts and textiles from afar. Founded by Arthur Liberty, the world famous British department store Liberty of London began trading in 1875 in a small shop called East India House, by the 1920s it was a leading establishment. Liberty was not a designer himself but a businessman who had a gift for recognising talent and new trends, hiring the top designers of the time. By the 50s the store had a seasonal brochure dedicated solely to it’s scarves and still today a third of the ground floor of it’s magnificent mock-Tudor London flagship store is devoted to scarves.
This elegant home accessory exudes exudes opulence and luxury with it’s soft, subtle sheen. The original fashion item displayed the old style Liberty of London logo design. Backed in new 100% pure Irish linen in a pristine white, the aristocrat of textiles and certified by the Irish Linen Guild, lined in a layer of natural bamboo wadding, filled with new plush duck feather insert and a concealed zip.
Vintage and antique textiles often show signs of their age and history, this is a common characteristic and one we feel adds to their unrivalled beauty. Please note some minuscule surface flaws including tiny brown age marks (see photos) which are usually found on scarves from the 1950s or earlier. They appear due to high humidity in storage and they do not get any worse once stopped.
Colour scheme wise this would be well suited to our Art Deco art pottery by Desvres Gabriel Fourmaintraux also in turquoise and blood red, also available on 1stdibs.com.
